Climate-Responsive
Homes for Bengaluru

Wright Inspires is a sustainable architecture firm in Bengaluru. Since 2002 we have designed 400+ homes and commercial spaces that stay cool without air conditioning, harvest their own water, and are built from materials that age rather than expire. Architects and ecologists in the same room, on every project.

Green home design that begins with the site, not the style

Before a plan is drawn we read the plot: where the sun falls in April, where the prevailing breeze enters, which trees are worth keeping, how water moves across the ground in a Bengaluru monsoon. Those readings set the geometry of the house. A home that is correctly oriented and correctly shaded is already most of the way to being a green home — everything after that is refinement.

This is why our houses look different from one another. There is no Wright Inspires template, because no two sites answer the same questions.

Passive cooling, in practice

Filler slabs with terracotta or clay pots cut roof heat gain and concrete volume at once. Terracotta jaalis let air through while cutting glare. Thick stone and earth walls flatten the daily temperature swing. Courtyards and double-height voids pull warm air up and out, drawing cooler air in behind it. Lily ponds and planted terraces cool the air before it reaches the rooms.

The result in most of our Bengaluru houses is interiors that sit several degrees below outside temperature through the hottest months, with fans instead of compressors.

Water, waste and energy as part of the architecture

Rainwater harvesting sized to roof area and to the household's real demand. Greywater recycled to the garden. Biogas from kitchen waste where the family will use it. Solar water heating and rooftop PV planned into the roof at design stage rather than bolted on later. These systems are cheapest and least visible when they are decided early — which is the case for bringing an ecologically-minded architect in before, not after, the plan is fixed.

Recognised for it

Our work has been published by ArchDaily, The Hindu, Surfaces Reporter, GoodHomes, Buildofy and The Arch Diaries, and recognised at the Indian Architecture & Design Awards, the UltraTech Design Awards and the Indian Concrete Institute awards. Awards are not the point, but they are useful evidence that the approach holds up outside our own studio.

Passive First

Orientation, shading, mass and ventilation before any mechanical system is considered.

Local Materials

Kota stone, terracotta, stabilised earth, reclaimed timber — sourced close to site.

Living Systems

Rainwater, greywater, biogas, solar and planted terraces designed in from day one.

Questions

What makes a home climate-responsive in Bengaluru?

Bengaluru's temperate climate rewards buildings that work with it rather than against it: north-light-led plans, deep shading on west faces, cross-ventilation through courtyards, high thermal-mass walls and filler-slab roofs. A well-oriented home here can stay comfortable most of the year with fans alone.

Does sustainable design cost more than conventional construction?

Envelope decisions — orientation, openings, shading, courtyards — cost nothing extra; they are design choices. Systems like solar water heating, rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling add capital cost that typically pays back in three to seven years, and lower running costs for the life of the house.

Which sustainable materials do you build with?

Kota and local stone, exposed and stabilised-earth brick, terracotta jaali, filler slabs with clay tiles, reclaimed and FSC timber, lime and mineral finishes. We prefer materials sourced within a few hundred kilometres of Bengaluru so embodied carbon and cost both stay low.

Do you work outside Bengaluru?

Yes. Our studio is in Bengaluru and most of our work is across the city and Karnataka, but we design homes, farmhouses and commercial projects elsewhere in India as well.
